Ken, I had exactly the same symptoms on my 74.5 TR6.  Dim red light all the
time, but the battery held charge ok.  I removed and opened the
alternator-- just remove the rear plastic housing--  and looked it over.
Looked closely at the diode leads which are soldered to metal tabs in
there, and one of them was definitely an "open".  Like a cold solder joint.
 I put a couple small alligator clips on the lead as a heat sink to protect
the diode from my gun, and just resoldered the open connection.  Red light
went away.  Since I was in there, I did replace the brushes since they are
cheap, but they were not the problem.
