Does your oil light work? Sounds like it may be the oil pressure switch (which
has a 3 wire plug and is located in the general area you describe).

I have a three wire snap-together type plug that branches out of my
harness at the point where it runs along the middle of the driver's side
wheel arch, approximately abeam the alternator. It doesn't seem to go
anywhere and it doesn't connect to anything. It looks "original", but it
doesn't make sense.

Can anyone explain this or take a look at their TR6 for comparison?

Thanks
