Hello,

My new TR6 (1972) is running horribly (bad/fluctuating idle, engine develops
ZERO power until about 3,000 rpm), and I'm going through the usual drill
trying to get it to work properly. Ignition is all new, but I have a basic
question about timing and carb mixture.

This model year has only a retard capsule on the distributor, which I gather
retards the timing at idle for emissions purposes. There's no vacuum
advance, just the centrifugal advance. On my car, the retard is not
connected. So when I'm setting the carb mixture at idle, at what timing
should the engine be set? I would assume I want to set the timing at 4BTDC
(as if the retard was working), then adjust the carb mixture, then re-set
the timing to account for the fact that my retard isn't working.

does this make sense, or is it a stupid question and/or line of reasoning?
also, am I correct in assuming that to set the correct carb mixture requires
the timing to be correct, too?

thanks.

Graham
