Al, maybe someone has tried it, but I think painting rubber might be a
bad idea. These things are ugly enough without applying a paint that's
likely to flake and crack. 

I'd just remove them, or use one of the rubber cleaner/polishes that the
group already suggested. I personally like all of the Griot's Garage
products, and as I think someone pointed out, they have a rubber
dressing that brightens them up nicely.
