Hi List,
I have asked a few questions in the past regarding my transmission leak. I
have a similar, yet different question today. I have a 71 TR6 that has a leak
right at the bottom of where the rear housing mates to the rest of the
transmission. The lower right bolt was stripped, but putting a slightly longer
bolt in has allowed me to be able to snug up the bolt, but I still have a leak.
My question before was if I could remove the rear housing with the
transmission still in the car. The consensus seemed to be that it wouldnt be
possible. My next question is if I can loosen the rear transmission mounts,
and remove the bolts that hold the rear housing to the rest of the transmission
and just let the rear housing slide back enough to put in some gasket sealer
and see if that will take care of my little leak. I think an eighth, or a
fourth of an inch would be enough room. Anybody done something similar or
someone who has taken these transmissions apart before want to comment on if
they think it is possible or not. The car is up on a lift, and the
transmission tunnel is out, so I have access to all of the transmission. With
the gracious and great help of a fellow lister, the differential mounts are
repaired, the lower cruciform that was missing is replaced, the square fill
plug that was half stripped is replaced with a hex fill plug and almost all of
the underside has been wire brushed, treated with rust inhibitor, and painted,
so I would really like to stop the self rustproofing the transmission is doing.
All help and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
