Geoff---Fear not. The distributor drive dog is not symmetrical, so it
can only drop all the way in, one way. Even if the rotor is 180 out of
time with the firing order, it's easy to correct this. (Some owners move
all the plug wires, but that looks bush) By punching out the pin at the
drive dog, turning the dist. shaft 180, then re-inserting this pin, the
drive dog will be as before, but the rotor will now be correct. Before
going thru this exercise, better to see if it's necessary as...

When the crankshaft timing mark is on TDC, #1 firing, both intake and
exhaust valves will be closed. (Check by twisting these two pushrods,
with fingertips) The rotor should be under #1 plug wire in the dist.
cap. If it's pointing to #6 (plug wire), the dist. is 180 out. Correct
by using the above method.

To be certain that the cam and crankshaft are in time with each other,
#11 & 12 valves should be open the same amount (on the rock) when on
TDC, #1 firing. While this is a precise measurement when setting up the
cam, for the purpose of checking to see if the dist. is out 180,
eyeballing these valves or their rockers is close enough.
