Mark---The clue provided as to why the engine won't start without
directly squirting in gas could lie in you "not finding any fuel" when
pulling the plug on the one carburetor. The old fuel could have easily
caused the float's needle valve to stick in the closed position. The
engine could be running off of the one carb that is getting fuel, but
making it difficult to start.

You could get lucky and free up the valve by rapping on the body of this
carb, but more than likely you'll need to remove the bottom half for a
more thorough flush on this area.
