Due to bell housing differences, there are only a few that will fit;
The TVR uses TR6 running gear, but they are very rare. Some of the Triumph
sedans used the same drive train (Vitesse, if memory serves) but they are
also very rare in the US. The TR250 also uses the same transmission and
are slightly more available, but were only made for one year.
The most common by far is the TR6 itself, and is therefore the most
likely source of a bolt on transmission. If you wish to get into doing a
conversion to say a Toyota tranny, that is a different story, but it will
not be a bolt on.
Your best bet is to get a tranny from a TR6 (any year). If you decide
to add an overdrive later (a highly coveted option) then the J-Type
Laycock overdrive is the correct O/D for 1976, and the most common. They
were used in Volvos and so are widely available used. Figure $750 to get all
the various bits to add the O/D at a later date if you decide to do so.
Non-OD transmissions are available on eBay, or any of the various
British dismantlers will have them for a few hundred dollars. Shipping
will be steep however, so find someone local if you can. I use
British Auto Works in the Portland, OR area.

As a new TR6 owner, (and most unfortunately not having a transmission for
it), can anyone help me out by telling me what other Triumph models use the
same non overdrive transmission as a TR6?
Are their different non-overdrive transmissions in different model years or
are they all the same?
What years and models will provide a bolt in non-overdrive transmission to
fit a 1976 TR6?
I am avoiding the overdrive transmissions because of cost, and would be
interested in information about 4 or 5 speed (if such exist) non overdrive
transmissions.
