Gary,
I often store my '6 for many months without driving. The only thing I
do when it's time to start up is:
1) Check fluids
2) Make sure the battery is charged up
3) Pull the plugs and spin the engine (with the ignition key, not by
hand) until I see oil pressure on the gauge. Note, this can take a
while because the TR6 block is long and it takes a while for the oil to
get all around the galleries
4) Put the plugs back in and start her up!
The other thing I do is that every time I park the car with the
intention of not driving for several months, I pull the rocker shaft.
This might be overkill, but by pulling the rocker shaft you close all
of the valves which means that none of the valve springs are compressed
in the same position for months at a time. It also means that when I
spin the engine to build pressure (I don't put the rocker shaft back in
until step 3 is done), the starter motor has less work to do, and the
cam is under very little pressure so there is less wear on the cam
lobes during this very harsh period of time in which there is almost no
oil present. The only problem I find with pulling the rocker shaft is
that inevitably the threads on one or two of the rocker shaft studs
strips when re-installing (not due to cross threading, but I guess due
to just wearing out - they don't seem to like to be torqued multiple
times). I now keep several new ones in stock!
