Stu---Is there is a chance that the manifold gasket is not compressing
because the manifold studs are in "backwards"? The end of the stud with
the shortest threads are to be screwed into the head, leaving more
threads for the "football-shaped" washers and nuts to be drawn up tight.
It would only take a couple of these short studs to cause this problem.

Are there any exhaust gaskets on the market that are thicker than
others? A friend of mine has an exhaust leak. The gasket has been
replaced and the manifold has been retightened, but he still has a leak.
He feels a thicker gasket might solve his problem.
