Is it physically showing signs of overheating? Or is your gauge just reading
that it is overheating? I have had a brand new temp sending unit fail. As soon
as the engine would warm up the temp gauge reading would march right to the
hot zone immediately. Yet the car would never physically overheat. I replaced
the part that failed (from Moss) with one that I picked up at the local NAPA
and all was well.

Just one more possibility.
