Subject: brake squeak
I have what one person in the archive calls a brake "squeak", in other
words a noise that occurs while the vehicle is rolling and the brakes
are not applied. The archives were somewhat inconclusive about the fix,
so I'm asking the list for the latest thinking on this subject. I
replaced the pads about three years ago, but didn't turn the rotors
although I did use the metal shims. The squeak has been getting worse
since last year, and slight turning of the wheel makes it worse. I
checked the wheels for play and readjusted the front wheel bearings last
year, but didn't really seem to help. FWIW I get some "squealing" (pad
to caliper noise heard when braking) too, but tends to go away if I
apply the brakes hard. Any help appreciated.

Hi John,
I remember that problem after the restoration of my 6;and suspected
different parts before i came to a solution.I didn't trust the
calliper(maybe the brake fluid couldn't escape fast enough) or could it be
the rotor,who was out of balance;all these parts were renewed and even the
stub axle.
But actually all this trouble was created by not original parts (replace
parts without the asbest)when i replaced the original brake pads by the
replacement stuff.If i drove right away after starting and the brakes where
still cold,i could live with this,but after a few stops the squealing
came back.
It toke me several saisons to find out the real raison for this to solve.At
that time the new "Green Stuff" brake pads came out and i ordered a set
from Rimmer,I've never had no squeal after this.
Now,they are 2000 miles on the car and i'm verry pleased with them,but i
only wanted to give you a hint;it was the perfect and cheap solution to me.
