  The PO removed the t-stat to work around the overheating issue.  Don't risk 
any further damage to your engine; have the radiator recored to modern specs 
before you continue.  I had mine done for about $200 four years ago, run a 185 
degree t-stat w/puller fan, no problems.  I presume you have already R&R'd all 
the hoses and your water pump is moving the water.
