I think someone mentioned using two screw drivers. I can't seem to get
enough
leverage on them; also I don't think they are strong enough.

The book calls for a special tool that looks like a big fork; which I don't
have.

i have removed the shock since I am putting polly bushings in.
The bottom of the ball joint has an inset so I tried hitting it with set
driver and a hammer, no luck.
Its hard to get a good shot at it. I was told to remove the spring and the
control arm; and I can see that that would give me a much better shot at it;
but I am trying to avoid that.

Any ideas?>

After perusing my data base on old postings, here is what I came up with. You
can buy a pickle fork for less than a jar of pickles at your local car parts
store. They make a great sound if you whack them with a hammer after using
them, thus relieving stress and affording rhythmic accompaniment to your
favorite music...

There was great noise on this listing for some device (they even bought this
in volume to offer to listers) more sophisticated using a screw-activated
device to separate them more graciously.

And there are some who advocate a two-hammer technique, but I will let them
describe it. This is the Russian method, using two 3 lb. hammers.

Jeff - do you have a tie rod/ball joint wedge/fork tool? Mine just took a
few whacks with a 3 LB hammer, POP!
