You already have some good answers, here's one more:
The A OD bolts directly to the rear of the gearbox housing
The J OD has an adapter housing bolted between the gearbox housing and OD
housing
this is probably easiest way to tell from under a car sitting on the ground
with limited visibility

PS - if your 74 1/2 has been retro-fitted with an A, there will be an
adapter bracket between the rear mount and the frame brackets
