I think the convention is to have the bolts inserted from the engine side
although I'm struggling to think why that would make any difference other than
perhaps easier to wield a spanner on the nut inside the tub than in the engine
bay.

I am bolting my trans to the engine on my six with the engine out of the car.
Which way do the bolts face? Are the heads on the trans side?or the engine
side or does it matter?
