My fiberglass hard top sure is! I've always assumed, going on the POs
statement, that my hard top was fiberglass. Based on the heft of the top
and not a single rust blister, I had no reason to think that it was
other than fiberglass. I recall rapping it with my knuckles and noting
that it sounded like fiberglass and not at all tinny. Until the recent
hard top discussion, it has sat untouched in the corner of my barn since
I brought the car home 2 years ago. I was giving it a closer examination
last night trying to find some identifying marks on this apparently
unique fiberglass hard top. I peeled back the perforated vinyl to find a
thick insulating blanket like that used under the carpet. Further
investigation revealed a tarred felt sound deadening material like that
glued to the inside of the doors. Could this be... Get the magnet!
Eureka! Sure enough, I have a factory metal hard top! What is amazing
and what led believe that it was fiberglass is that the shell is in
perfect condition. No rust, zero, none. The windows have crazed somewhat
and the vinyl is aged and needs to be replaced. This part of my
restoration should go pretty easy.
