trunk springs and deformed lid

While we're talking about the trunk springs....

My S.II trunk/boot lid has been deformed from what appears to 
be the spring mechanism over-extending and hanging as you try 
to push the lid closed.  It looks like the over-extension is a 
result of wear.  The bowing of the lid occurs around where the 
spring arm attaches.  Have others run into this?  If so, has 
anyone come up with a good fix?
