I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but....

Just by the fact that your old top was secured under the aluminum side
plates, that means if the top has ever been put down, something is now bent.
There was a service bulletin issued by Rootes back in the 60s that details
the steps needed to correct this, and unfortunately, it starts with new top
frame hinges, and ends with instructions for the dealer to inform the
customer of the correct way to fold the top.  Somebody on the list must have
a copy of that bulletin.

The tricky thing about the top frame hinges is that they are 3 dimensional -
they hold the upright behind the side window in all planes of motion. After
several hours of work, I managed to reshape mine to get a reasonable fit,
and smooth operation, but I had the cloth completely off at the time.
