I noticed that you said that you'd probably get a '97 V8 Explorer.  If you
can afford it, I'd recommend the '98.  The rear hatch design is improved and
a lot easier to use (although the rear wiper doesn't work very well), and
the '98's have the 2nd gen. airbags (depowered) which might be an issue with
your petite wife.

I'm very happy with my '98 Explorer V8 XLT, except for the payments and fuel
economy.
