Um, so yeah. Interview with Katie Kelly. Oh, how EXCITING! I'm just
imagining my dad calling me up for the interview... and then falling asleep
(family pattern).

Okay, so wow, I can't believe you're interested in this. Far out. Okay,
started when I was sixteen, four days after getting my drivers license. This
would be in late 1985. Good God. There were children born then just starting
to autox now. Does this make me... OLD?!

It was an autox school, and I drove a Ford Pinto. Mike Camicia was my
teacher. Next autocross, graduated to a Lotus 7A. Pretty cool autox car for
a 16 year old, eh?

Got my mom when I was 17, and my dad when I was a bit older, early twenties.
But really. We were the only ones in our class. Big woop.

The funny thing is, okay, I was like the only one in APL in '87, so I like
WON this National Championship. The next years were just like NO FUN at
Nationals or at home because a) I had to defend this title and I was 18, and
b) I created this notion that if I COULDN'T do it with real live people in
my class that I was a failure of some sort and once I hit twenty, I would
just be over the hill.

What was I thinking?! If only I knew that life would get SO MUCH better.

Seriously. You see those people screaming at everyone around them when they
have a bad day, and they can't be a good sport, and they're going to blame
everyone around them for their bad runs. That was me when I was 18. I catch
myself doing that, and I say WHOA. You can't live like that, your autocross
career is doomed if you think like that, and I'm just glad I had a mom who
said, "No, you're going away to school, and if that doesn't work, a former
communist country. No more autocrossing for you. You're being a butthead
now." There are so many autocrossers whom I wish had moms like that. So many
people need to walk the streets of Eastern Europe.

Okay, so that's like my lecture from this 30 year old Old Fart.

Cheers,
Katie K.
