We have our Banner reflective lights mounted in 2' of schedule 40 PVC pipe
that's mounted to a tripod. The pipe give a good line to sight down and
protects the lights from the sun, rain, and (I hope) errant drivers. They
had been mounted in a smaller tube without as much shielding. So far this
year they've been operating much better.

Another issue we found was electrical connections. The timing system had
been hooked up to batteries with cigarette lighter adapters. These
adapters make very bad connections. Changing over to real plugs and
clamps got rid of any remaining problems.

Don't skimp on wire or connectors. Buy the best you can.

Cal Club (or more accurately, the person who maintains our equipment) took
the timing heads of the JACircuits lights out of those stupid crates and
put
them in 2" or 3" diameter, foot long tubes mounted on an adjustable home
made tripod affair. No problems with sunlight, and much easier to aim (he
even put a sight on top of the tube).
