As someone that may have autocrossed back in the 70's/80's, but quit and
then returned three years ago. My memory isn't quite as clear as John and
Rocky's so obviously are. Key to their printed discussion are the
elements that made AX a painful waste of my time back then and something
that I enjoy today. Their discussion picks apart and uncovers "speed
creep" and lays it bare for all to see. The thing about it, is that it is
a sport that I now like. And I'd venture to say the reason it's growing
is because of the changes that got us to where we are today. The cars and
people that compete are much more diverse than ever before (in spite of
all the claims of "not me" classes).

Thanks Rocky and John for your piece. It should be required reading for
all those that just haven't gotten it. It's not that the times are
changing, they already have. I don't think the Solo program can survive
if 'we' decide to go back to 10 foot gates and 25 foot slaloms. Good old
Houston was one of the first to get into trouble for having 21 step slalom
gates, now it's the norm. So I guess it's our fault. We, at least I,
accept the blame for making the sport more fun for some of us.

Again, thanks for the history lesson.
