There's more to this issue and Bill Martin was not the only victim in
this deal. I happen to have some first hand knowledge regarding this
rule. At the 1992 Pro Solo Nationals that was held on the south course
at Salina, Marcella was a victim of a red flag on the left course and
she was directed off course thus driving through all the Salina airport
crud and the sticky go-fast BFG 206 gumballs were coated with rocks,
dirt, and other unidentifiable debris. Her rerun was not pretty because
of the gook coated tires.

After 92 nationals I wrote a letter to the SEB requesting that the cars
be allowed to continue on course at a slow pace to prevent the tires
being all gooked up. They approved the request and subsequently changed
the rules.

The 1993 rule books were suppose to reflect the rule change but due to a
clerical error the rule was not published in the book. I believe they
included it in the 93 national supps. The 1994 rule book had the same
problem and the national supps again had the rule. In 1995 I became the
Street Prepared Advisory Group Chairperson and still brought up the
omission. The 1996 rule book still had some clerical errors and I gave
up trying.

I do have the letter from the SEB saying that they were going to change
the rule. Oh well, at least I tried.
