Dennis,

Now I'm not a competitive autocrosser, I could care less
about winning Nationals. I just like to drive.

But I have always found National Tours and Divisionals
to be lots of fun. There's a different feeling there, kind of
a bigness and buzz that's missing at regional events.
Usually the courses are awesome and so challenging. You get to
meet new people from all over, and many of them are people
you'll read about later. Many of them you might care to see again,
though there are some real jerks there, too. The nice ones are
primed to have a good time, so you do too. You get a two-day
or three-day period so some of the stresses are gone. And the
events are so well run that it's pleasant for workers, I think --
you don't have to worry about getting a three hour run group
in the hot sun. The party and dinner is always pleasant and
relaxing, or usually. You might get to spend some time with
people you see at every event and get to know them a lot better.
You find a lot of really nice people that way, and you can
see them again at every event.

If you are a really competitive driver you get to see where you
really are in the pecking order. If you just like to run, you learn
some lessons about lines techniques and car setup (maybe seeing
just how far you can legally stretch the rules).

Or that's how it has been for me. Pity I don't have a car this
year : -{
