A good friend of mine bought one of the first Hummer wagons that came
out on the commerical market a few years back. It was a truly excellent
off-road vehicle and we did some serious 4-wheeling in various western
states. But it weighed around 6500 lbs. and the 6.5 liter turbo diesel
had about 195 HP (at the crank). With each horsepower dragging over 30
lbs. it takes quite a while to get to 60 MPH. Despite its towering ride
height, it didn't have much body roll during cornering, though it's
unclear whether this was due to its extreme width, its stiff suspension
or because the thing only pulls about 0.6 lateral G before it starts
sliding. The vehicle (I hesitate to use the word "car") was so noisy the
passenger and driver had to shout just to hear each other talking, and
he kept a pair of active hearing attenuators for each passenger for use
on those long drives. That Hummer is quite an interesting vehicle and we
had some great adventures in it.

Would it be a legal autox vehicle? Based on our experiences, it felt
more stable under cornering than most passenger cars I've driven, so it
might be a safe autox car. However, I don't know whether the newer
models are as wide, or have as stiff a suspension.
