This past Saturday I visited Altamont Motorsports Park and discovered
several former autocrossers involved with the racing.
Steve Dutton originally started autocrossing at the Pleasanton
Fairgrounds.
Now he runs a "Late Model" Pontiac.
Don Campbell began autocrossing with a Corvette, switched to a
Viper, and then he took the northbound exit from 101 to Candlestick too
quickly and crunched the Viper. Oops.
Then he decided the SCCA World Challenge was for him and ran that for a
season. The car alone cost him $70,000 and then he ran the entire circuit
all season all around the country. That was last year.
Now he has an oval track Limited Late Model with a spec engine worth about
$20,000 total and he runs just about every Saturday night at Altamont.
Crewing for Don was David Morin a former regular with SFR and
former member of the Steering Committee. From Morin I learned Perry Kincy,
my predecessor as event scheduler, is now living in Las Vegas. Both David
and Perry have become active in the NASA racing program. It was Perry who
used his people skills to get us into the Oakland Coliseum.

Here's my point: Saturday night, Aug. 14, is "Fan Appreciation
Night" at Altamont Motorsports Park. Everybody gets in FREE. Parking is
free. Racing starts around 6 p.m.

It can get breezy so be prepared and bring a warm jacket if you choose to
go.
