Last week I saw an add in a local Buy & Sell for a 74 Bricklin, and, as
I want an AMC powered Bricklin in the future to match the race one that
I am building, I went to look at it. The car is #16, with 16,000 miles,
and is suffering from a case of neglect. the body had been painted
(white) and looked not bad, but several panels were de-laminating. I
tried to start it, and after boosting it it ran badly, spraying fuel
out of the carburator. Also, the passenger door window was broken
andthe interior needs some work. However, I made a very low offer
compared to his asking price, he made a counteroffer, and I went home
to think about it. Even though the timing is wrong (money, time, and
space are in short supply right now) I decided to go for it and phoned
back, completed the deal and arranged to pick it up early this week. I
didn't drive back to make a down payment (mistake) as I had an
extraordinarily busy weekend on another project. Tuesday I phoned to
arrange a pickup time and was told the car was sold to someone else
over the weekend for more money and, although disapointed, my own rule
is the first man with the money, so I couldn't say to much. However, I
then discovered the purchaser (a**hole) of the car was the brother of a
good friend of mine who, upon hearing about the car through me, my good
deal and the fact that I didn't leave a down payment, went over with
cash and offered $500 more, purchasing the car from underneath me. To
say I am upset is an understatement. If it had have been someone I
didn't know, it was my loss because I didn't leave a down payment. But
for someone to use my inside information to s***w me is an extreme
lowlife. I know this is sour grapes, and I'm disapointed in myself to
be so upset, but if anyone is looking for a passenger door window for
car # 16 charge him quadruple.
