Speedo Cable

I too was also a victim of the melted speedo cable.  My little brackets
used to hold the cable to the undercariage had rusted so my cable had a
little extra slack.  I rapped my exhaust pipe with a roll of
header/exhaust pipe heat shield.  It soulnds like your Idea is much
simpler and probably more attractive than a foot long rapped exhaust
pipe.
