When I first got the MGB the seatbelts were more or less unusable.  I
took them apart to see what was what and eventually did get them
working again (although adjusting the inertia triggers was a bitch).
Anyway, if you decide to take your seatbelt return mechanisms apart,
one side says "DO NOT OPEN".

Don't open it.  :-(
