I just couldn't stay out of this one.

I currently have 5 GT6's and 2 Spits. I have often considered converting one
of the GT6's into a convertable by using a spit body. They will bolt right
in place on a Mach I GT6 ( the shocks bolt to the frame not the body).
I have studied several of these conversion in the Denver area ( no complaints
about frame twisting problems).
On one of my GT6's I cut the roof out to make it a targa top. No problems
here either. I have been driving this car hard ( including autox) for the
last 8 years and have had no problems with frame twist (measured every year
durring my anual inspection of under cariage).
Somewhere in my piles of photos I have a picture and description of a spit6
that was raced in SCCA style racing around 1970. No major frame
modifications were done to that car either.

I may have mentioned this before but it may be of interest to those of you
working on spit6's. One of the major handling problems with the GT6 mark I
is the swing axels and the camber of the rear wheels. It turns out that the
spit 1500 has an easy solution. The axels in the 1500 are 3/4" longer than
the GT6 MI but are machined identically. I swapped the axels and added an
extension to the emergency brake cable. The result is considerably more
camber and much beter handling for high speed tight corners. This also
lowers the back end some so you may want to use spit front springs to lower
the front also. If you use spit front springs you will need to weld a tab of
metal onto the front towers to keep the spring from comming out when not
under load. I know this isn't very clear so send me a note if you would like
details on this.
