As an aside, anyone know why the old design using a xverse
leaf spring as the upper suspension arm (a la the BRM V-16 (?))
        was abandoned?

I'm going to guess here, based on my experience with a GT6 which has
exactly this arrangement in the rear: the center of the spring is
bolted to the top of the diff, which is bolted to the body
(essentially). It's too hard to adjust camber, and it transfers too
much suspension motion into roll.

Later GT6's and Spitfires went to a "swing spring", where the spring
was free to pivot at the center above the diff. This effectively cut
the roll rate in half, since only half of the spring was acting on the body.

Jim M can probably speak with much more authority on this...
