a lot of confusion about coil springs can be resolved if you remember one basic fact: A coil spring is a torsion bar. It is wound in a helix for use, but it works exactly the same as a torsion bar. The bottoming of coils to provide rising rate is one trick that straght torsion bars can't do though.
