My sympathies, Bob. I could have sworn that a new timing chain and gears
would have pulled all the slack out of the system.

O.K. Now some brainstorming in no particular order, and including stuff
that you have probably already checked...

1) Vacuum leak. Completely or partially sheared vacuum hose allowing air
   in under some circumstances (e.g. engine twisting on mounts under hard
   acceleration).

2) Some too-clever 1974 emissions valve opening or closing under some con-
   dition of engine operation. This presumably would be something mounted
   on the body, not on your '69 engine block.

3) Bad electrical connection in distributor harness causing intermittent
   cutout of plug firing.

4) Sticky valve stem or weak spring preventing valve from closing occasionally.

I'm at the end of MY rope, and I don't even OWN the car!
