------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, saturday went pretty well for the midget gearbox transplant.
After I had the old one out, I took the cover off the have a look and
try to see see what happened. The mainshaft was moving all over the
palce when the gears were engaged. So, either a thrust washer broke
apart or the little circlip that holds 2nd gear in place came loose
(possible since I couldn't even get into 2nd gear with the car movivg).
But, overall it wasn't too bad of a day. Luckily I had done this before
(unfortuneately it was only last year). I guess I'll leave the gearbox
rebuilding to pros from now on.
But, I still have a big decision to make. What gear oil should I
use? I was at the local auto store and was looking in the sta-lube
catalog. Their catalog list GL5 for 75-79 midget. Always thinking
ahead, I looked under Triumph since I was putting an '80 sptifire box
back in, it said GL4 for all Triumph gearboxes. My Haynes manual says
to use Hypoid ??/90. So, I went with the Castrol hypoid 75/90. I
haven't put it in yet, but I've been wondering what I should use. I
still have 3 quarts of Redline MTL 90. It says it will replace all GL4
oils.
Help, it's not supposed to be this complicated.

   Thanks,
      Dean
