temperature gauge

I believe the one on my car uses ethyl alcohol (I'm not sure
about the amount of water present in the alcohol).  
Most part suppliers I deal with will give you a new
one with a discount if you give them your old gauge.
They just send the units out to one of a couple places
which rebuild the gauges.  

I had great success (meaning 12 years later it still works)
 with Motorhead on this point.
