Fibrous puck on timing chain cover

Hi...

The the record, my '69 TR6 had such a weird fibrous hunk of stuff attached
to its timing chain cover.  Didn't see it when I bought it, but became
noticeable while being steam cleaned.  Most it came off with a little tugging,
the rest is still attached.

It was pretty obviously strange old original equipment.
