I have a 77 MGB and had to replace the turn signal switch a couple of
years ago. After banging, pulling, heating and bleeding on the thing, I
took the whole thing out of the car, from the universal joint on.

With the whole thing out I suspended the wheel in a vise so it was hanging
by the wheel. I took a large heavy hammer and hit the shaft and "pop" off
it came, no damaged threads either. The trick is a large hammer, I mean huge.

Hope this helps, there is nothing brute force cant handle.
