I should mention my girlfriend Louise in a most favorable light - when we
met she had No Car (gasp!) which actually was part of the reason we got
to know each other better (she needed a ride home, but when we got to
the old Mustang, it knew a good thing when it saw one and refused to start).
Soon thereafter, though, she bought an Opel 1900 for $150 which was cheap
at half the price, and in great need of brake pads, carb rebuild, and a
trip to the crusher. Louise set about replacing the brake pads, putting
the carb back together, and adjusting the rusted pair of vise-grips holding
the throttle assembly together. The car was great for the next 2 1/2 years,
at which point the suspension fell off, and it got it's long-deserved crushing.
Before that, though, Louise trashed a disk (no, not the brakes...) by trying
to pick up a tree that was a bit too heavy, and since then she hasn't been
able to work on cars without quite a bit more than the usual pain, so she
doesn't. She gets a bit pissed off at me when I spend a lot of time on cars,
but I think it's at least partly that she wants to be doing it herself.
