I used a 58 MGA as a daily driver for 12 years (sold it into retirement
when it was 23 years old). Out of those 12 years, I was without its use
probably 4 months (most of that due to a complete engine rebuild). I did
spend time on weekends keeping it in good shape. Many of those 12 years it
sat out in cold Penna. winters when I was a grad student (married with a
kid) but it always got me to class.

I have had a 79 Midget for the past seven years and after I replaced the
Lucas electronic ignition with an Allison/CranCams system, the car has been
as reliable as any american car (I know this can be taken in a number of
ways).

My advice is, if you want a really fun car, buy one. Get a car that has
been well taken care of and used as a daily driver. Read every book you
can on the care and maintenance of the beast and take loving care of it.
Find and honest & capable mechanic and use him/her when necessary.
Maintain a good relationship with your mechanic, other British car folks,
and this net, so you can get answers to the unusual question.

I also own a 911 Porsche, but the Midget is a lot more fun pound-for-pound.
You can drive near its limit without having every cop in town on your
case. I highly recommend the english car habit.
