On the Triumph the Voltage Stabiliser is mounted on the back of the
speedometer...
The silly thing is a bimetallic strip and a heating element. When the
current flows through it, it heats the element... bending the strip...
which breaks the connection... the element cools... the strip bends
back.. making the connection.
In other words, it chops the current flow very like blinky Christmas tree
lights. The gages are slow enough you don't see this oscillation.
If the stabiliser isn't grounded it doesn't heat up and so the connection
is never broken.
Anyway the orientation info might have to do with cooling airflow or it
might be a Haynesian abberation.
