Yes, this is a bodge, even without the battery situation.  Roll bars are
to be bolted to the metal itself, never through carpeting.  Essentially, the
idea is to sandwich the metal of the car between too plates; the mounting
plate which is welded to the roll bar tubing, and a matching backing
plate.  If carpeting is to be left in the car, it must be cut to fit
around the bar.
