Hi all.

I saw this on the rec.autos.marketplace, and thought it deserved
a wider audience. Also seen on r.a.m was an ad for a TR8 coupe
and a '76 MGB.

Enjoy

My wife and I bought our '74 MGB roadster in Eugene, Oregon in June of
'84 with about 60,000 miles. We then drove it about 30,000 miles in the
Los Angeles area through October of 1985, whereupon we moved here to
Milwaukee. In the last nine years we've added another 15,000 miles.

Our "B" is absolutely rust free. The car has NEVER been driven in the
winter or in snow. It's been stored summer and winter (in our garage)
the last four years and our need for a house down-payment forces its sale. I
would like to keep it but I've finally lost the war of wills with my wife.

Description:

1974 MGB roadster (last year of the chrome-bumpered B's.)
4-speed
Steel wheels
Everything is stock
Everything works except windscreen washer and instrument panel dimmer
  rheostat
Paint is O.E.M. orange/tan; interior carpet and seats are black
New Michelins in front and very good generic radials in back

General condition:

The car is in extremely clean, all original condition. Nothing has been
"hacked" or back-yard repaired. All the emission equipment (injector rail
and air pump configuration) is complete and functional. All wiring is
factory stock. The only non-stock parts are a cheapo radio/cassette player
and two oval (4X6") speakers mounted in cut-outs between the passenger and
trunk area. I just installed a new twelve-volt battery in place of the
original two 6-volts that are standard. There's a chrome luggage rack
mounted on the rear lid which has been there since the car's purchase.

The body and mechanics are in excellent condition. No dents and a few VERY
minor dings. NO rust. When we bought it, the seller (in Oregon) said that
a rebuilt short block ('74 vintage) had been installed in 1982. It appeared
to have been resprayed (with the original factory orange) and there is some
slight evidence of body repair which the seller claimed to know nothing about.
Since our ownership began, the car has never been in an accident of any kind.

Repair history:

While not concourse, the car is -- as I've said -- in extremely clean
condition. We've not scrimped on maintenance and we have ALL receipts since
day one available.

New factory seat upholstery in July '94. ($350)
New battery
New front tires and excellent rears
Recent rag top (Whitney cheapo)
Passed Wisconsin D.O.T. emissions test last August.

In the last 30,000 miles:

New brakes front and rear and new master and wheel cylinders
New distributor
New clutch and master cylinder
New fuel pump
Rebuilt carbs
Reground valves and new rings (after cylinder hone)
New belts, hoses and a million minor items (choke cable, map light, etc.)

I was a British car mechanic for five years before starting graduate school
and I was (and am) good. The car always has fresh oil in it -- I replace
it even though I don't drive it -- and stabilizer in the gas tank during
storage. I start it at regular intervals and run it long enough to get
the condensation out of the exhaust.

Our MGB runs flawlessly, the transmission synchros are perfect and, overall,
there are no 'gotchas' or worrisome eccentricities. There are the usual
rattles and a predictable (minor) oil spot beneath the engine when parked.
A slight shimmy felt in the steering wheel between 62 and 65 mph (even though
the alignment has been checked out okay and there's no uneven tire wear). I'm
trying to be exhaustively honest here -- it's not perfect but it's the MGB *I*
would buy in a second if I could get out of the damned mid-west (back to
Seattle where I was born, e.g.!). Thanks for your interest and, please, no
offers of trade or anything weird. My wife and I will deliver within the
Midwest.

Price: $4,400
