British cars of the ages that you drive often have a coding for their
tyre spec - this table was quoted by the AA in 1976:
Rim Size mark Speed Mark
Dia only S H V
--------------------------------------------------------------
10" Up to Up to Up to
75 mph 95 mph 110 mph
120 km/h 150 km/h 175 km/h
--------------------------------------------------------------
12" Up to Up to Up to
85 mph 100 mph 115 mph
135 km/h 160 km/h 185 km/h
--------------------------------------------------------------
13" Up to Up to Up to Over
and 95 mph 110 mph 125 mph 125
mph over 150 km/h 175 km/h 200 km/h 200
km
Thus a tyre spec of 175HR14 was 175 width, 14" rim, radial, stressed
to 125 mph.
