It was the bottle opener (no twist-offs way back when...), that originally
looked like the ornate church key and picked up the slightly sacreligious
nickname. Most brewery workers (free beer) carried one. The name just
carried over when cans were introduced...BTW, most paint stores have
a few freebies for regular customers; hats, stirrers, and paint can open-
ers - with a can hook at one end and a bottle opener at the other...
