Chrysler converted to 12 volts negative ground, from 6 volt positive 
ground, in '56 along with Ford.  GM began the conversion with its 
senior cars in '53 and by '55 all were 12 volt.  Packard, K-F, Nash, 
Studebaker etc. followed a similar pattern.

BMC cars were using 12 v, positive ground systems in the post-war 
period which means they probably used them before the war.  My 
Standard Vanguard is 12 v positive ground.
