Happy New Year to Everyone!

Glad to be back at work, as I've been ill the last 2 weeks and am finally
getting over coughing, wheezing and false starts. The sicktime off was an
opportunity to tear down a U-20 engine, so I can make sure it gets well
also. Yeah, all my fun for the last 2 years was on a 1600.

Like Ken the Datster, I've got questions about the timing chain setup. I
found shims behind the crank sprocket. Just how many shims and washers are
there supposed to be in the timing setup? Can't tell by looking at the
Datsun parts illustrations, as it skips this detail.

I also found that my lower tensioner guide was broken. Read that it's best
to leave that small guide out altogether, because it'll only break again.
Anyone else have problems after leaving it out?

Also read that it's best to replace the gears along with the chains and
tensioners. Closely inspected my gears, and found that there is wear
between the teeth, sort of makes the pocket between the teeth deeper. Hard
to see at first glance, but it would probably cause problems if reused. Can
this be a source of looseness in a timing chain?

Also read that it's recommended to leave out the gasket behind the
chain tensioner. Something about the gasket interfering with the oil flow
into the tensioner. Better to have metal on metal contact, and any oil that
leaks there actually helps lubricate the chain. Any thoughts on this?

Would also appreciate any tips about rings and pistons, as I'll be pulling
the crankshaft this weekend.

Thanks,
Fred - So.SF
