Hi Lou,
Getting the frame powder coated isn't a lot of work, but it does require you
to completely strip the frame. After I did that, I borrowed a friend's
pressure
washer and cleaned all of the grease, grime and dried goo off the frame. I
did this to help out the sandblast guys...it speeds up the process and makes
less mess. Plus, pressure washing the frame allowed me to check it for
damage and broken welds. When I did this I saw that the front sway bar
brackets needed to be re-welded.
After that, I just put the frame on my trailer and carted it off to the
powder coating shop. Most places will charge between $350-600
to powder coat a frame. The roadster frame is fairly small, so it
should fall in the lower end of the range. At Airborn, the price also
included the sandblasting.
I considered painting the frame myself, but decided on the powder coating
because it just wasn't worth a couple of hundred dollars to deal with the
aggravation, mess, etc. involved with painting it. Plus the powder coating
will last the life of the car and is virtually chip proof.
