I stated "tread width" not tire width. The size listed on a tire is the total
tire width, sidewall to sidewall. The sidewall will be wider than the tread in
most cases. If you look at a racing tire the sidewalls are fairly straight, a
passeger car tire designed for comfort has a fairly round balloon shape. What
the magazine articles say is that the actual tread width should not exceed the
wheel width.
