your describing the fan clutch bearing set up. It sounds like the PO used
long bolts to lock it up instead of a replacement spacer.

Subject: Fan Clutch Spacer Block Oddball?
All this talk of spacer blocks has got me wondering about my fan set-up on
my 69 2L. I had it apart several weeks ago while cleaning and repainting
parts. After I removed the four screws and the fan blade I found an "X"
shaped casting that the fan blade and cover bolts to. It freewheels on the
shaft. To keep the blade stationary with the pulley, two of the fan blade
screws are quite a bit longer and tap into the face of the pulley assembly.
Is this the "spacer" set up that everyone is talking about or did a PO find
an alternate way to cure the fan clutch problem using the remenants of the
original fan clutch?
My only concern is the "X" shaped casting does not appear to be perfectly
symetrical but instead weighted.
I also have the 7-blade fan. Are there other later model datsuns that have
OEM four blade fans that would cross over to the roadster and that are
available at the local salvage?
